Vyšší Brod: The Cistercian monastery

Vyšší Brod is situated on the embankment of the Vltava River, about 30 kilometers from Český Krumlov.

In the 13th century, Czech magnate Peter Vok I of Rosenberg founded the Cistercian monastery. According to legend, this act was the expression of thanks to God, after Vok survived the heavy waters of the Vltava.

The monastery Church of the Assumption of Our Lady from the 13th century is its most valuable part and its dominant feature. The oldest part is the square capitulary hall.

Recently, the Cistercian community has been living in the monastery. They have been reconstructing the objects step by step. The church, the capitulary hall, the third-biggest library in Bohemia with its 70,000 books, the picture gallery and the Post Museum are all accessible to the public.
