Javoříčské Caves

Location: Litovel area, Olomouc district
Length of the route: 788 meters
Length of the tour: 60 minutes

The underground system of the Javoříce Caves consists of a complex of corridors, domes and abysses. The caves were created in an island of Devonian limestone and the Špraněk stream played a part. The main part of the caves was discovered during several hours of demanding travel through the lower level as far back as 1938, and other sections were gradually discovered in the ’50s. Currently, more than 3.5 kilometers of corridors are known, of which 788 meters are open to the public.

The caves have beautiful dripstone decorations, the richness of which excels in two monumental spaces: the Detritus Cave and the Cave of Giants. In addition to the most common types of dripstone decoration, which achieve most respectable dimensions in places, there is also a rich occurance of helictites, which are dripstones that grow in defiance of the laws of gravity. Another dominant feature is the rock curtain, which is more than 2 meters tall. The lower level, which is not open to the public, is formed by a complicated labyrinth of corridors connecting abysses that plunge to depths of up to 60 meters and have yet to be fully investigated.
