Kateřinská Cave

Location: Blanensko area, South Moravian region
Length of the route: 430 meters
Length of the tour: 30 minutes

The entrance to Kateřinská Cave can be found in the deep Suchý Žleb canyon near the Skalní mlýn information center. Access is through an entrance corridor leading to the Main Hall, which has been known since time immemorial. With dimensions of 95 x 44 x 20 meters, the Main Hall is the largest underground space accessible to the public to be found within the Czech Republic. Due to its excellent acoustics, the cave is occasionally used for vocal and instrumental concerts. The cave includes the New Kateřinská Cave, discovered in 1909 by Karel Absolon’s work group. Some of the most beautiful parts are the stalagmite Witch, lit by spotlights of different colors, and the Bamboo Forest, a group of rare, meters-high stick-shaped stalagmites. The entrance portal is a significant archeological and paleontological monument. There is also the unique mass find of skeletons of cave bears in one of the chimneys in the cave.
