Sloupsko-Šošůvské Caves

Location: Blanensko area, South Moravian region
Length of the route: 1670 meters
Length of the tour: 100 minutes

A large complex of underground domes, corridors and chasms created on two floors. These caves are an important location where carcasses of cave-dwelling animals (bears, lions and hyenas) have been found. Eliška’s Cave, with its rich stalactite decorations, also has excellent acoustics, which is why it is sometimes used for chamber music concerts. During reconstruction in 1997, the Stupňovitá Abyss was spanned with a bridge and a new, non-traditional view was made available to visitors. Nagel Chasm, 80 meters deep, is the largest underground abyss of this type in the Czech Republic. From the two platform bridges, visitors can look down to the bottom. Since 1997, the sightseeing tour has included a world-famous archaelogical locality - Kůlna Cave - where part of a Neanderthal man’s skull, about 120,000 years old, was found. The Šošůvka area, discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, is characterized by fragile and colorful stalactite and stalagmite decorations.
