Zoological Garden in Liberec

The zoo lies in a picturesque valley near the city center. Part of it is forested, some egresses are situated on rocky slopes, and a stream runs through the lower part of the area. Paths for visitors afford a comfortable walk. The zoo offers refreshments for visitors. It occupies an area of 13 hectares.

The Liberec zoological garden was built in 1919. It has approximately 300,000 visitors per year.

The zoo contributed significantly to saving the gene resources of Somalia wild asses, liontail macaques and Dagestan turs. It organizes a breeding station of rhinoceri. It participates in four European EEP breeding programs and sits on four committees.

The garden breeds 527 mammals of 63 species, 249 birds of 66 species, 20 reptiles of nine species and 22 fish of fiive species.

Among the most remarkable species you can see there are, for example: Steller´s sea-eagle, white-bellied sea-eagle, lion-tail macaque, chimpanzee, orangutan, snow leopard, Somali wild ass, white rhinoceros, musk-ox, Rotschild giraffe and white Bengal tiger.

The garden looks after 10 species listed in the Red Data Book of endangered species and 13 species endangered in Czech nature.

During a visit, you can also see a breeding facility for birds of pray, an exposition of penguins, a pavilion of giraffes, an apes pavillion, an open-air outlet for chimpanzees, a pavilion of orangutans and an egress for white tigers.

The Liberec zoo is the only one in Central Europe that breeds white tigers. The tigers Columbus and Isabela were imported from Switzerland.

The zoological garden lays within the reach of the mass public transport of the city of Liberec.
